Bind items not a curse

Wandering around Middle Earth on a Friday afternoon, I decided to have a got at the simple Fellowship quest that I'd failed to finish the other day. In the end there were no people around to join up with, so being a cocky level 10, I decided to try it by myself. And to my credit, I managed to get in sight of the chief before 3 of them overcame me.

That's not the point of this though. I noticed a couple of things. Firstly, I was getting significantly better drops from these baddies - in other words, either the fact I had levelled up was getting me better stuff, or the fact that they were supposed to be items to be shared among a fellowship. Whatever, it was the place I got my first LOTRO Medium Armour.

I also snagged two new bows, which was a coup for a Hunter. The first was just a stick longbow, which even so was better than the one I was using, which was basically a twig with some string. But then suddenly, I got a funky Yew Bow. Faster action and more damage - yeah, baby! When I went to equip it, it asked me if I really wanted to do so, as it would be "bound" to me. Now, you might have seen "Bind on equip" and "Bind on Acquire" notes in some of your LOTRO items. I already had, which meant that I had already looked into it.

Bind on Acquire in LOTRO means that the item can only be used by you after you pick it up. A lot of quest reward items are set as this. You can use these and sell them to traders (NPCs), but you can trade or give them to another player. That's all that "Binding" means. It's not cursed; you can still uneqip, change items and swap back and forth, etc. They are just set to you.

The same is true for Bind on Equip. They aren't cursed; they just become "yours". You can still sell them later to an NPC when you get a better item. So unless you're a big trader with other players, don't be afraid to bind items as they tend to offer you better features.

Oh, and as to trying fellowship quests by yourself? Well, I reckon you might be able to do it as long as they are a couple of levels below you, but it's not as much fun as with a fellowship. That said, I'm going back for the Chieftan to see if his men have got any more goodies they want to donate.
