It's a big autumn for Sonic on the handheld platforms. On the PSP, we have Sonic Rivals 2, a follow up to racer Sonic Rivals. We've got a hands-on preview of the game this month, and, while the original Sonic Rivals was frustrating in many ways, we're hopeful that the sequel will put many of these right and give a much enhanced gaming experience. Sonic Rivals 2 preview for Sony PSP
What with Sonic Rush Adventure wowing us this issue, and his appearance with arch rival Mario in the official game of the Beijing 2008 Olympics due to be pulled out of Christmas stockings worldwide at year's end, it's a good time to be the speedy blue hog. And with the sequel to decent-if-unspectacular PSP racer Sonic Rivals set to improve in every way on the sporadically entertaining original, it could well be the best few months in the history of Sega's famous mascot.

The beauty of Rivals was that it was effectively a 2D game with 3D looks. Eschewing the approach of the atrocious home console games, this was much more of a racing game than the action platformer it was billed as. The ‘rivals' element was provided by a character who would run through the level with you – the challenge being to beat them to the finish, though the offensive moves to hamper your opponent meant it was much more feisty than just a flat-out foot racing game.
