Yes, that's Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario the plumber, arch rivals of the early days of consoles, teaming up in one game to compete against each other (and with a host of other familiar characters) in a variety of different events. A s Shigeru Miyamoto so elegantly puts it: "For a long time [Mario and Sonic] have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster… Mario or Sonic."

What do we know?
That the only possible answer to that question is ‘Sonic'. And that this unlikely pairing of Nintendo's and Sega's mascots represents one of the biggest turnarounds in videogame history – after their fierce rivalry in the heady 16-bit days of the SNES and the Mega Drive. Admittedly, it was always on the cards since Sega went third-party, but it wasn't until they got the license to the Olympics and considered getting Sonic involved that Sega approached Nintendo to use their most popular Mushroom Kingdom characters.
