FIFA and PES are like City and United – each has their own loyal set of followers and there's no room to sit on the fence… you're either one or the other. The tradition has always been that FIFA has the glitz, polish and glamour, while PES has always boasted the gameplay that's preferred by football purists. But the divide is closing and the two are becoming more alike with each annual instalment that goes by.

FIFA 08 has the gaming equivalent of a Russian billionaire's worth of backing, and as ever, it looks the part. The presentation is slicker than all the hair gel used in the Premier League put to gether, and there's none of this scrabbling around trying to work out which team's which and what the players' real names are like in PES. FIFA has 620 real teams from 30 licensed leagues around the world and of the 15,000+ real players, many of their faces look exactly like the real thing. The game's also been spruced up – the AI is slightly more intelligent, and making killer passes is easier than ever before.
