Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare preview DS

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare preview for Nintendo DS

Call of Duty fans will be used to the World War 2 setting of the previous games, but in Call of Duty Modern Warfare, as the title suggests, you'll find yourself in an altogether more up to date setting. The action centres on a civil war in a fictional Eastern European country, and modern day combat takes place in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In our major hands-on preview this month, we look at how the game plays out on the DS and what the departure from the WW2 setting means for the Call of Duty franchise. It's not out until the end of the year, but you can get a taste of what's to come in our Call of Duty Modern Warfare preview in this issue of HGZine.

Considering that the touchscreen interface of the DS should be perfect for first-person shooters, there's remarkably few quality FPS games on the console. In fact, there's only the one – Metroid Prime: Hunters. That said, Activision are hoping to change all that with a new DS game in their superb Call of Duty series, which is due to hit UK shores sometime in the next few months.

The first thing you'll notice about the game is that the series has been brought bang up to date. As you'd expect, the clue is very much in the title, so rather than battling through France or Russia in the Second World War, you're now flying in helicopters and firing off hundreds of rounds on state-of-the-art weaponry – including sniper rifles, RPGs and a silenced SMG (submachine gun).

The plot centres around a civil war in a fictitious country that's being run by a dictator in Russia. You play as the SAS and the US Marines in a number of glamorous locations around the world, with the eventual aim being to overthrow the dictator and restore peace to the world. So nothing that difficult there, then.
