Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery review - DS

Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery review - DS

Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery is a city-building sim with a historical slant, as you might guess from the name. It's new to the Nintendo DS but has been around on the PC for some time, although it's made few waves outside of its native Germany, where it's a huge hit. The gameplay is what you would expect - guide your settlers through the early days of building their city, grow the settlement and see it prosper, with some nice features that work well on the DS. Check out our Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery review for Nintendo DS to find out more.

Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery review for Nintendo DS
If you told someone even five years ago that they’d one day be playing a fully featured city simulation game on a handheld console, you’d have been dismissed as a fantasist. However, that fantasy world is alive and kicking on the Nintendo DS, and is indeed teeming with life, from lowly pioneers to wealthy aristocrats, all bidding for a slice of 18th Century pie. The Anno series has been kicking around for years on its natural home of the PC without really troubling the mainstream. Except in its native Germany, that is, where it is treated with the kind of reverence normally reserved for beer and sausages.
If you’ve ever played this type of thing before, you’ll know the routine. Build a settlement from scratch, provide for your citizens’ needs, watch them develop and live happily ever after. Except of course it’s never that easy. A burgeoning population requires a regular food source, houses need protection from fire and crime, people insist on access to churches, schools and taverns, and before you know it you’re overseeing a teeming mass of humanity using only your DS wand.
