World of Warcraft: Hallow's End Achievement Guide

Published on October 18th, 2010

The cries of the Headless Horseman ring through the air, fires are burning in the towns, and buckets of candy are spread throughout the world. It’s that time again – Hallow’s End!

The event runs from October 18th until October 31st, and takes place in all major cities and inns through the world and has plenty of achievements and cool loot for you to earn (if you haven’t already done so in the past, that is).

So, let’s take a look at those achievements, and what you need to do to earn them.

As with most holiday events, Hallow’s End counts towards the What a Long, Strange Trip it’s Been meta achievement, rewarding players with the Violet Proto-Drake mount for completing them all, so is definitely worth doing.

The basics:

A lot of the achievements centre around random items found in Treat Bag, given by all Innkeepers, and are limited to one per hour.

Simply head to your nearest inn, speak to the Innkeeper and select the ‘Trick or Treat’ dialogue option, and one of two things will happen.
If the Innkeeper is in a generous mood, you will receive a Treat Bag, which can contain many of the items needed to complete the various event achievements, or you may receive a trick, which could turn you into a bat, pirate or other forms and no reward.

Seasonal Candy Buckets are located inside each inn, usually by the innkeeper. Each bucket will give you a ‘quest’, which you complete there and then, and reward you with a bit of gold, and a Handful of Candy, which provides G.N.E.R.D.S., Chewy Fel Taffy, Soothing Spearming Candy and Pyroblast Cinnamon Ball.
Each candy will give you a short buff to certain statistics, but make sure you keep hold of the G.N.E.R.D.S. as they are used for an achievement, which I will cover later.

The Headless Horseman:

The Headless Horseman has risen once again; causing havoc in the main starter zones, and resides in Scarlet Monastery’s cemetery where you will need to go to take him on for an achievement, and a chance of grabbing his mount.

Like many recent holiday boss events, the process for grouping has now changed, and instead of groups of people congregating in Scarlet Monastery, and taking turns to summon him, the whole thing has been linked into the Looking for Group interface where you will see a ‘Headless Horseman’ option.
Select this, choose your role, and wait for a group and you will then be ported straight to the boss. Only one attempt is required per group, and each day you do this (first time only), you will be rewarded with a treat bag, which can contain various holiday items from Flying Brooms, candy, a pet and a rare chance to receive the Horseman’s mount.

The fight itself is easy, and should provide very little challenge for most groups.
To start with, the fight starts with a simple ‘tank and spank’ affair with the Horseman, until his head flies off around the graveyard. Move on to attacking the head until it moves back to the Horseman’s body, and then rinse and repeat the process until he is dead, which takes around three cycles.

The achievements:

Check Your Head: Use Weighted Jack-o’-Lanterns to put pumpkin heads on each of the races listed below.

To earn this achievement, you will need to throw a Weighted Jack-o’-Lantern onto one of each Alliance and Horde race. The Lanterns can be looted from the Horseman event in Scarlet Monastery, or from the Crudely Wrapped Gift, which is a reward from completing the event quest in the low-level starter towns.
Once you have picked up enough of the Lanterns, the easiest place to complete this achievement is in Dalaran where all races tend to congregate.

Sinister Calling: Obtain a Sinister Squashling pet and Hallowed Helm.

This achievement is the downfall of many players attempting to earn the event meta-achievement, as it is reliant solely on luck, and the dreaded random number generator.
Both the pet and the Hallowed Helm can be earned from either the Treat bag from your first daily kill of the Horseman, or your hourly Trick or Treat at an Innkeeper.

That Sparkling Smile: Show off your sparkling smile using a Toothpick.

Use a Tooth Pick, which can be obtained from an Innkeeper’s Treat Bag.

The Masquerade: Get transformed by the Hallowed Wands listed below.

Various wands can be found in the Treat Bags, from Bat and Wisp, to Pirate, and you will need to be transformed into each of these forms to earn this achievement.
This often sparks a lot of trading in the major cities, with people offering a shot of the wands they have, in return for the ones they are missing. Although this achievement is easy to earn, you are reliant on other people, rather than collecting the wands yourself.

If you have a decent sized guild, who are into achievements, this should be easy, but if not there should always be enough people in the cities willing to trade a shot. You may want to try to get this one done as early as possible, however, as people tend to charge crazy amounts of gold towards the last day or so, to the people desperate to earn this achievement before the event is over.

G.N.E.R.D. Rage: Earn 50 honourable kills while under the influence of the G.N.E.R.D. buff.

You will find G.N.E.R.D.S. candy in your Treat Bag from Innkeepers, which provides a slight buff to your dodge rating. Head into a battleground, chug some G.N.E.R.D.S. and get busy.

If you die, you will lose the buff, but there is no cooldown on the item, so as long as you have enough you should be able to get this one fairly easily, even if you’re not very good at PvP (like me *ahem*).

Rotten Hallow: Ruin Hallow’s End for the Alliance/Horde by completing Sergeant Hartman’s/Darkcaller Yanka’s quests.

It is time to get playful, and try to spoil things for your rival faction.

As Alliance, you will need to head up to Tirisfal Glades, to the road on the Eastern side of Undercity, where you will find the giant Wickerman statue. This is pretty simple as you just need to ride up to the statue, and then get away again – just be careful of the elite abominations that are guarding it and possibly any Horde players if you are on a PvP server.

One of the Horde quests involves dropping stink bombs in Southshore so, as Alliance; it is your task to clean them up.

For the Horde, things are slightly more difficult, but with enough people around it should not prove too much of a challenge.
You will need to toss three Forsaken Stink Bombs into Southshore, and then place the Rotten Eggs in the main brew keg located inside the Southshore Inn. You will need to deal with the Southshore guards here, and any playful Alliance players, but again, this should not be too difficult as there are always enough Horde players around at the time.

Bring Me The Head of… Oh Wait: Kill the Headless Horseman

This is one is self-explanatory. Queue up with the LFG tool, and take on the Horseman in the graveyard to pick up this achievement.

Trick or Treat: Receive a handful of a candy from one of the Candy Buckets located in an inn.

Again, another easy one – just complete the ‘quest’ at any Candy Bucket inside an inn.

Out With It: Eat so many Tricky Treats that you get an upset tummy.

The Tricky Treats are dropped after defeating the Headless Horseman – eat a handful quickly until you throw up, and you will earn yourself this achievement.

Tricks and Treats of Eastern Kingdoms: Visit the Candy Buckets in Eastern Kingdoms.

Every inn has a Candy Bucket. Make your way round to each one in Eastern Kingdoms for this achievement.

Tricks and Treats of Kalimdor: Visit the Candy Buckets in Kalimdor.

As above, head to each inn through Kalimdor and help yourself to the Candy Buckets.

Tricks and Treats of Outland: Visit the Candy Buckets in Outland.

Now that you have travelled Azeroth in search of candy, make your way to Outland for more of the same.

Tricks and Treats of Azeroth: Complete the Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdoms and Outland Tricks and Treats achievements.

No extra effort needed here. Just complete the previous three achievements to pick up this one.

There are two more achievements that you can earn during the Hallow’s End event, but due to the high difficulty in completing one of them, they are not required as part of the main meta-achievement.

The Mask Task: Obtain a Flimsy Mask during Hallow’s End.

The masks are drops from the hourly Treat bag, obtained from your Innkeeper. Although there are many different ones, only one is needed for this achievement.

A Mask for All Occasions: Collect the 20 unique Flimsy Masks listed below.

Obtain each of the 20 masks available during the holiday event, via the Treat bags from the Innkeeper.

There you have it, each of the Hallow’s End achievements covered. Happy Halloween folks, and good luck with your trick or treating.
