Yesterday we brought you up to speed on the Focus Attack – the most crucial part of any Street Fighter’s arsenal. Now it’s time to take it to the next level, with the ultra-tech EX Cancel, one of the coolest things you can do in any game. If you’ve got the skills.
What is it?
Ever played a high-level player and seen them almost ‘teleport’ out of a move ans straight into another? Well that’s an EX Cancel. You’re basically cancelling the animation of one move and freeing yourself for another attack. You do it by hitting Focus Attack the split second after hitting a move, then dashing out of the focus attack. So, to use the terminology, hit a move, immediately FADC, and you’re away. This move cannot be done without a quarter of the EX bar filled though – hence the name.
Why use it?
To be honest, it’s more of a flair move than a truly vital piece of offense, but there are times where it can be used to link into an ultra or super, where usually you can’t. Hit a Heavy Dragon Punch with Ryu, EX Cancel out of it, and you should have enough time to hit his ultra, if you’re quick. Unbelievably satisfying if you pull it off.
