The land of Skyrim is a harsh, unforgiving place and after a hard days adventuring, the last thing you’ll want to do is sleep at an inn or worse yet crash in the quarters your guild provides. Despite Bethesda’s best efforts owning a house is usually something most gamers ignore yet they come with a wealth of benefits which are as follows:
- Storage: Each house has cupboards and chests to store your high-level adventuring gear you don’t have the heart to sell to a merchant.
- Stats Boost: Sleeping in your own bed gives a boost to Magicka and HP.
- Partner:Provides a home for your wife, husband, Khajhit or Ork is you like that sort of thing.
So how do you get a house? Well, you’re going to need several thousand gold coins and the name of the NPC to purchase the property from, but the quicker you get on the housing leader the easier it is to keep all that loot and the first one is pretty much free.
Unfortunately before almost every house is purchasable you will have to win favour with the local town leader and become a thane, but for the cheaper houses the quest line is usually very simple.
1. Breezehome, Whiterun:
2. Vindrel Hall, Markarth:
3. Honeyside, Riften
4. Hjerim, Windhelm
5. Proudspire Manor, Solitude
N.B: The easiest way to find each of the five houses is simply talk to a coachman, hitch a ride to what city the houses belong to and then speak with the town Jarl. From there he’ll usually give you a quest to win his favour, do that and he’ll allow you to purchase property in his town once you’ve deemed yourself worthy. So far we’ve only found five properties purchasable in Skyrim, but we’ll add more if and when we find them.
