Of the many, many things that you can achieve and unlock in Red Dead Redemption you’ll get the chance to hone your skills in a number of areas, including becoming a Survivalist, A Master Hunter, A Sharpshooter And A Treasure Hunter. In the second part of our guide to “Challenges” we look at the role of the Master Hunter and how you can reach your way to the top toward that 100% completion mark.
If you become a Master Hunter you are also one step close to obtaining a Legend of the West Outfit for Marston. You’ll still have to complete the three other “Challenges” though, which we’ll feature in our Red Dead Redemption section once complete.
Shoot bear first to knock down health before going in for the kill
Once you skin and kill your first Coyote you’ll begin the challenge on your way to becoming a Master Hunter.
There are ten levels you’ll need to complete in order to become a Master Hunter and along the way you’ll receive a Fame award for each one you complete.
1. Collect 5 Coyote Pelts. You have to kill and skin the Coyotes.
2. Collect 5 Deer Pelts. You have to kill and skin the Deer.
3. Kill 5 Wolves with your knife and collect their pelts.
4. Collect 5 Boar Tusks and 3 Armadillo shells.
5. With your knife kill 2 Cougars and get their pelts.
6. Collect 5 Racoon pelts, 5 Skunk pelts, 5 Fox pelts.
7. Collect 5 Elk Meat and 5 Bighorn skins
8. With your knife kill a bear and get their skin.
9. Get the pelt of the legendary Jaguar, Khan, found in Ojo Del Diablo
10. Find Lobo the legendary wolf, Gordo the legendary Boar and Brumas, the legendary Bear around Aurora Basin, Nekoti Rock and Stillwater Creek.
Rewards
At level 5 you unlock the Buffalo Rifle and at level 10 you’ll be able to create a health item by harvesting vittles from animals.
Tips
Check your map, if you zoom out you’ll see pictures of animals in certain locations. Head to that location to search for them.
Buy Bait from the stores in town and plant it around areas that are rife with the animal you’re looking for. If you wait and stay back you’ll eventually see the animals attempt to grab the bait, giving you a good opportunity to pounce. The hardest animals to find are the legendary ones when you get near to your goal of becoming a Master Hunter.
Where to find the Legendary animals
1) Khan The Legendary Jaguar – In Ojo Del Diablo south of the road
2) Lobo The Wolf – This giant black wolf can be found in the Aurora Basin around the small lake
3) Gordo The Boar – South of the River in Stillwater Creek
4) Brumas the Bear – In Nekoti Rock in a cave at the top of the mountain.
Remember, you can sell animal pelts at local stores to earn yourself some extra cash

how do i collect a pelt from animals? sometimes i knife or shoot an animal for the challenge part of achievements, and i get no pelts. is there a certain way 2 kill an animal 2 get a pelt?
In response to tommy, just walk over to the animal you just killed and press Y on Xbox or Triangle (I think) on the Playstation to start skinning it. That is how you collect pelts.
how do u find out what lvl hunter u r?
Vince, pause the game and go into journal, then to challenges. it will show you the four challenges, if set in motion, to earn the Legend of the west uniform.
Whenever i shoot a small animal (rabbit raccoon beaver etc) they explode and i cant skin them. please tell me why.
The animals explode because you are using too big of a weapon when you kill the small animals. Try using you pistol or the Henry Repeater (if you have it unlocked) for the small stuff. Hope this is what you’re looking for
i only have 2 do the master hunter challenges but i need 2 more armadillo shells, and i cant find them anymore.

Can i still go into Mexico to get the armadillo shells or do i have to progress in the game? I’ve learned the lasso from Bonnie and i took out pikes basin. I also helped Nigel West Dickens.
Like Tommy, I’m having trouble finding any pelts from skunks, racoons and foxes. Every single time I kill one of them I get fur and meat, but never a pelt.
do you have to keep them or can you sell them after you do these things
@Magnum Apex — When you skin small stuff like Skunks or Foxes ect. You get ‘fur’ which is the same as pelt.
@Julian — You don’t have to keep the stuff after you complete the challenge.
@Miles — To go to mexico you have to progress in the game. Sorry. There are Armadillo’s around Armadillo at night.. Or around the roads..
Hello. I am on level 8 of the master hunter challenge and I have killed a bear with a knife and skinned it but no pelt. I have probably killed over 60 bears trying to get a pelt but it still doesn’t give me one ever. Why is this and how can I possibly find a bear pelt. I have probably worked on this master level 8 for 2 to 3 hours… Maybe more.

Was wondering if there is a trick killing the cougars with a knife? Anyone?
to kill the cougars with your knife, run after them rather than waiting for them to run towards you. keep ur knife drawn and strafe around them in circles and then when you have the opportunity, go in for the kill. it takes two slashes from what i’ve seen.
i have killed all of the legendary animals but i still havent unlocked the legend of the west outfit :S any suggestions?
I have 94% in game completion and my Master Hunter won’t even show up on my challenge list. I’ve done every other challenge including the Tomahawk and Explosive Rifle DLC’s, but Master Hunter has never showed up on my list. What the heck is wrong?
