Infinity Ward really went all out on the killstreaks in MW2. This customisable reward system can really add a whole new element to your game. Here are a few tips on making the most of each one.
3 Kills – UAV
Unless you’re in the heart of the battle it’s always worthwhile having a look at the full map when a UAV is in play. Just hide in a corner or in the grass and take a couple seconds to see how the action is playing out. Make a mental note of useful things and act accordingly: If it’s a close quarters battle or they’re all camping in a building then toss a frag or semtex in that direction. If they’re all headed straight for the rest of your team then try flank them. See where they’re spawning and try loop around the back. Never underestimate the advantage a UAV can give a team. A lot of players choose higher killstreaks because they get direct kills but play a match where nobody has UAV and you’ll see how much that little guy in the sky is missed.
4 Kills – Care Package
See the MW2: Supply Crates tip on this website if you’d like a more in depth look at these. But otherwise I highly recommend them, not only for players who battle to get higher killstreaks but also for those just having a bad day. They’re extremely random in their generosity as you can imagine so I wouldn’t rely on them if you’ve got a pre planned strategy. There’s nothing worse than re-spawning and dropping your crate only to find it’s a box of ammo.
4 Kills – Counter-UAV
These are all about timing and your aim should be to try cause as much chaos and confusion as possible amongst the enemy. Panic causes people to do silly things and MW2 multiplayer is no different. If somebody on your team has just called in a Pave Low for example, trigger your counter-UAV and watch the other team get decimated. They’ll need to be relatively open to try and take it down putting them at huge risk when they can’t see it on the radar. It’s also great when combined with a ‘ghost’ class, flanking an enemy with a silenced assault rifle and counter-UAV is deadly. Plus you can have ‘Stopping Power’ instead of the ‘Cold-blooded’ perk to combat the negative range effect of the silencer because they can’t see you on the map anyway.
5 Kills – Sentry Gun
Get to know your maps! Have a quick look around each map when not in competitive play so you at least have an idea of some good spots. Then simply place it according to the action of whatever match you’re playing. Remember, sometimes in front is not always best. If you can sneak a sentry gun around the back of a team you’ve got them pinned and you’ll rack up loads of kills. Another great way to use this killstreak is by simply defending it. Some players seem hell bent on destroying sentry guns and it’s like moths to a fire breathing dragon. Just get a good spot overlooking the 180 degree “weak” spot your sentry gun doesn’t cover and you could well get more kills than the gun itself.
5 Kills – Predator Missile
There’s not too much to say about this one other than look which direction the enemy is running! Having an enemy outrun your missile because you aimed it at where they were is frustrating at best. Having an enemy run straight into your missile will leave you with a warm fuzzy smug feeling in your belly.
6 Kills – Precision Airstrike
Open up the overhead view and wait for a couple red enemy blips to show up as the enemy opens fire. Think about how the action usually takes place on that part of the map. Are they all making their way down the far street on Invasion? Are they all running from their spawn point towards the centre building on Derail? While games do differ most maps take on a general pattern for each game type and you can direct a pretty effective airstrike based on a small bit of map knowledge and a couple red blips.
7 Kills – Harrier Strike
Harrier Strikes are a great way to obtain higher killstreaks. This means it’s usually pretty exciting getting one because you’re on the verge of getting that Chopper Gunner you love so much. The problem is that without UAV on or a good idea of the action you may well waste it. Communicate with your team to find out if somebody’s got UAV. Sometimes it may be better sitting tight and waiting for a better moment. If you’re holed up in a pretty good spot you may even find you get an extra kill or 2 by just being patient. Always try get your Harrier in the thick of the action, not only will the initial airstrike get the most kills but it will require the enemy to look directly above them to shoot it down leaving them vulnerable to attack.
7 Kills – Attack Helicopter
Not much to say here other than try using them in conjunction with team-mates aerial attacks. Unlike COD4, it’s possible to have a few things in the air at once. And from personal experience, trying to shoot down a helicopter with a harrier around and a couple airstrikes coming down is not fun. So if this is your top killstreak and your overall kills in the game are more important than getting a high killstreak then hold off till at least one other team-mates aerial attack is in play.
8 Kills – Emergency Airdrops
Don’t rush to drop these! The rewards you get from them don’t count towards your killstreak so there’s no reason (unless the game is almost up) for you throw that signal flare down as soon as you get this killstreak. You’re going to need to be far away from the action and in a decent space. You should also be careful not to drop them when your team is spawning all around you. You might well kill half of them and those you don’t will be all over your crates like Mario on a mushroom.
9 Kills – Pave Low
This is a fantastic killstreak that does all the work for you to great effect. If this is your top killstreak and you’re not hiding in a corner somewhere waiting for your Chopper Gunner or AC-130 then go out and get some kills. If the enemy are hiding away then lob some frags in their direction. If that doesn’t work use your special grenades and a close range weapon to rush the buildings. Just generally try apply as much pressure as possible while your Pave Low is in the air. Leaving the enemy to sit tight in safety is not going to get you kills.
9 Kills – Stealth Bomber
Like the Precision Airstrike, try to see if you can work out how the action is playing out. Even if the only information you have is your own spawn point and where your team mates are, use this to your advantage. The enemy are most likely spawning on the opposite side and heading towards the action. Also remember to have your bomber start at the edge of the map to maximise the area of destruction.
11 Kills – Chopper Gunner
Everybody’s favourite killing machine, the object here is obviously to get as many kills as possible in the time you have. So don’t be too determined to kill a single player hiding deep inside a 2 story building, you might well find if you shift the direction you’re shooting in there are plenty of easier kills. These players will then re-spawn and you’ll end up with more kills.
11 Kills – AC-130
Unlike the Chopper Gunner, the AC-130 has some unfortunate reload times so make those shots count. The mention of an AC-130 in the air will be enough to cause the enemy to stay indoors so remember to fire into doorways and through skylights. One well timed shot from the 105mm gun into a doorway can usually sort out enemy players a little shy of the outdoors.
15 Kills – EMP
This is very much a team benefiting killstreak so communicate with your team about when to use it. If you’re about to mount an offensive or if somebody’s about to call in their own killstreak. Using this in conjunction with some of the other higher killstreaks will wreak havoc on the enemy. You can also use it defensively if you’re being decimated by aerial attacks.
25 Kills – Tactical Nuke
Nothing to say here, if you’re getting Tactical Nukes I doubt you need advice on how to use them!
