Alongside weaponry, there’s a a variety of equipment you’ll need to master throughout the game.
Gasmask
Your most critical piece of kit, the gasmask must be worn when venturing outside or enterting certain toxic zones. Eash gasmask filter has a limited time of effectiveness – check your Watch to see how much time you have left, the main dial is your indicator. As your run low, the mask will begin to frost up and your breathing will become audibly ragged. When this happens, tap Down on the d-pad to change filters. Run out of filters and you die, so to be sure to hunt for them when exploring the surface.
Journal, Compass And Lighter
Use the back button to draw your journal, lighter and compass, and use the Left and Right triggers to activate. The journal tells you your current objective, and the compass always shows the right way to go should you ever get lost. The lighter can be used to illuminate your journal as needed.
Survival Watch
Your watch shows two vital pieces of information. The first is the remaining time on your filter, as described above. The second is your current visibility, via the three lights next to the dial. Green means you in total darkness and cannot be seen. Yellow means partial darkness, and you risk being spotted. Red means you are in full view and will be instantly spotted.
Remember that the enemy AI uses more than sight to detect you! Treading on broken glass, triggering traps and firing un-silenced weapons will give you away. Some mutants will even sniff you.
Universal Charger
This device powers both your head torch and night-vision goggles when you acquire them. Press and hold down the R stick to bring out the cahrger and then pump the trigger. A full charge should last you a whole level. Your head-torch will never go out entirely, but the brightness will diminish and the cone will narrow. Night Vision will cut out when you run out of juice.
Med Kits
Metro 2033 uses a re-charging health mechanic, but in a fire-fight you can give yourself an instant boost by using an adrenaline syring. These are in short supply, so use wisely.
Night Vision
Night vision goggle can be purchased at some stations, or looted from enemies later in the game. The stealth suit comes with Night Vision as standard. Press and hold Up on the D-pad to switch night vision on.
Stealth Suit
The stealth suit can be purchased in Armoury Stations. It includes night vision and allows you to walk silently – usually, you are only silent if you crouch. Triggering broken glass and alarms will still give you a way though.
Heavy Suit
Also available to buy from Armoury Stations, this reduces the amount of damage you can take.
