This guide will investigate the many pitfalls and advantages of using each of Mass Effect 2′s heavy weapons. We’ll also list them in order of power and relevance to Shepard’s campaign. Our choice of number one may surprise even the most experienced gamer.
5. M-100 Grenade Launcher
This is the first heavy weapon you receive and even though some may knock it for its simplicity, there’s no doubt that this is the perfect weapon for clearing out low level enemies. Make sure your targets are clumped together for maximum damage. Use this weapon for side quests when you’ll be coming up against mercenaries and it works very well in conjunction with anti-gravity biotic powers. Any of the campaign’s bosses are best tackled with more powerful weaponry, which is sure to be listed higher up in the list.
4. ML-77 Missile Launcher
The missile (not rocket) launcher is great to use when your enemies are at a distance. The unique homing ability, which no other heavy weapon possesses, means that this is the tool of choice when dealing with giant mechs and mobile combat drones. Players can fire rockets in quick succession and there’s no recharge time. It does tend to eat up ammo rather quickly but that’s nothing compared to the next weapon on the list.
3. M90 – Kain
Even though the M90 doesn’t technically use any nuclear material, you shouldn’t mess with a weapon that leaves mushroom clouds in its wake. It would top the list if we were judging purely by shot to death ratio but the fact that you can only use it when your ammo status is at 100% drastically limits its use. More of a one use per mission sort of deal, this weapon requires more heavy ammo than gamers will have in their possession. You can’t argue with the results but the amount of time this will be sitting idle in your inventory means that there are many better weapons you can bring to the battlefield. When you do wish to use it, reserve it for the final game boss and make sure you aren’t near the blast radius.
2. M-622 Avalanche
Using cryotechnology this weapon has the ability to freeze your opponent after you’ve drained their shields or armor. Perfect for when facing multiple enemies but make sure you charge it for a second or two before firing. Best of all this cooler than cool gun not only disables foes but also causes them to take damage whilst frozen and immobile. Not much heavy ammo is needed to use the Avalanche so don’t hesitate to take it on the later missions.
1. Collector Particle Beam
When choosing the best weapon in Mass Effect 2 there really isn’t anything that comes close to this beam spewing powerhouse. It may look like something out of Master Chief’s universe but it doesn’t require ridiculous amounts of ammo and zaps shields down to nil in practically no time. When you eventually fight the Collectors face to face there’s plenty of heavy ammo lying around for this weapon to get plenty of use. Perfect for annihilating smaller troops, medium sized gangs, and giant bosses this is the heavy weapon for any occasion.
