It’s quite difficult to decide which role to level up for all your characters. Each member has their core three roles, which gives you a good indication what you need to level, but deciding which role specifically is a little difficult. Here is a handy guide on what role is important for each character.
Her three main roles are Commando, Ravager and Medic. Being an all-rounder rather than specifically skilled at a certain role, it is vital you put as much time into levelling Commando as you do with Ravager.
Lightning is great at chaining stagger and then topping up the health of the party if in desperate need. During the initial stages of the game you have plenty of points to level up each of the three roles. Keep up with this until the game opens up and then concentrate on Commando and Ravager. Once these have been maxed out push the medic role. After that Synergist, Saboteur and finally Sentinel.
Snow starts off with Sentinel, Ravager and Commando. At the start of the game, Snow starts off with the highest strength value but it slowly drops later on in the game where he becomes the best for defence. He also seems to have the highest HP out of all the other characters which means he is great for taking the majority of damage during big fights.
Concentrate on levelling his Sentinel class and then move on to Commando and Ravager. His Synergist and Saboteur classes are both weak but not as weak as his Medic, so level up his roles in that order.
Sahz’s three main roles are Synergist, Ravager and Commando. He is a great character if you can gear him out right but during the initial stages of the game, he is a very safe character to rely on. Sahz’s best style is the Synergist role, where he is only really challenged by Hope who has equal skill. Team up Sahz’s Synergist skill with his Eidolon and you can deal out some real damage.
Saying that, Sazh’s commando role is pretty poor. I’d not concentrate on it for too long, instead picking with Saboteur or Sentinel to play with. His medic class is dismal as well, so level that role up last when you are levelling up.
Vanille
She begins with Saboteur, Medic and Ravager. For the majority of the game you will be concentrating on Medic and Ravager. The Saboteur class doesn’t really come too much into play until much later in the game. However, it is Vanille’s Saboteur class that make her the most deadly and useful class in the game to level with.
Her Death spell can take out some difficult Cie’th stone bosses (helping you score an easy 5-star rating) as well as the giant Adamantoise creatures that lurk around Gran Pulse. These offer 40,000 CP per kill. Once you have levelled up these three roles, concentrate on Synergist. After, Commando and Sentinel.
Hope
Hope is going to be on of your go-to characters throughout the whole of the game. He is the best magic user in your party and his Medic and Synergist classes are the best. He also has Ravager as his third primary role but you’ll want to concentrate on the other two before pushing that role.
Hope has the lowest HP in game, which means you will want to keep a Sentinel user in the party whenever you use him later on in the game. After levelling up those roles, concentrate on Saboteur. His Commando and Sentinel classes are just as useless as each other, concentrate on them last after everything else is maxed out as you’ll never find yourself using them.
Last but not least is probably the most valuable party member in the game. She starts off with Commando, Sentinel and Saboteur. Concentrate on Commando, as she is the most experienced attacker in the game. She also has the highest strength attribute available in your party. Her Sentinel ability is rivalled only by Snow. Combining her and Snow together for high damage fights is a great way to keep alive.
After you have maxed the above three, concentrate on Ravager, Synergist and lastly Medic. She is a pretty proficient Ravager, so don’t count this out. She can heal and raise characters with her medic skill and cast Haste and a few other simple buffs with her Synergist. She is pretty much the most useful character in game, keep on eye on her.
