Final Fantasy XIII: Barthandelus in Oerba Boss Battle

Published on April 11th, 2010

Barthandelus is back again and is just as tough as the last time. That’s okay though because Gamerzines has you covered. Click the jump to get the full run down in tackling this , Barthandelus.

Final Fantasy XIII: Barthandelus in Oerba Boss Battle

Taking on Barthandelus for the second time.

Get ready for one long battle. Barthandelus might not seem as tough as the last time you tackled him but his HP has increased tenfold, resulting in a very long battle ahead. You’ll need to concentrate on constantly staggering him to get a decent amount of damage in.

These paradigms will do;

  • Lightning: Medic / : Saboteur / Hope: Synergist- (Evened Odds)
  • Lightning: Commando / Fang: Sentinel / Hope: Ravager – (Delta Attack)
  • Lightning: Ravager / Fang: Commando / Hope: Ravager – (Relentless Assault)
  • Lightning: Ravager / Fang: Synergist / Hope: Ravager – (Mystic Tower)
  • Lightning: Medic / Fang: Sentinel / Hope: Medic – (Combat Clinic)

Once you have gained a decent amount of buffs for your party, switch to Delta Attack. Two rounds of this should build up the meter substantially enough for you to switch up to Mystic Tower and stagger Barthandelus. Deal out some damage before switching to Combat Clinic to cure your party and heal any negative status effects that might have been cast.

As Barthandelus hits around 4-500,000 HP left, he will cast Doom on your party leader. You’ll now have to become more aggressive with your attacks. Use TP to heal with the ability Renew and don’t bother so much with traditional healing methods. Switch to Relentless Attack and pump as much damage into Barthandelus as you can.

Remember to keep an eye on Barthandelus’ movements as you’ll need to switch to Combat Clinic when he readies up Thanatosian Laughter.

I managed to defeat Pope Barthandelus on the third try, without being hit with Doom. He does have a shit load of HP, but it’s really not hard to whittle it all away if you have the right techniques and use them efficiently. My party and paradigms consisted of:-

    Lightning-Sazh-Fang

    Light:Ravager/Sazh:Ravager/Fang:Commando (Relentless Assault)
    Light:Commando/Sazh:Ravager/Fang:Commando (Aggression)
    Light:Medic/Sazh:Medic/Fang:Sentinel (Combat Clinic)
    Light:Ravager/Sazh:Synergist/Fang:Saboteur (Guerilla)
    Light:Ravager/Sazh:Medic/Fang:Sentinel (Entourage)

I began with equipping all the defensive and HP boosting accessories I had. I used a Gold Bangle and a Tungsten Bangle on Sazh, a Silver Bangle and a Rainbow Anklet on Fang, plus a Diamond Bangle and the Tetradic Tiara I gained from the fight with Dahaka on Light. ALWAYS equip the Tetradic Tiara from now on, it’s vital if you want to get a head start!

Begin with the Guerilla paradigm, hammering at Barthandelus with Fang’s debuffs and Light’s magic, while Sazh buffs up the party. Since you already have a head start with Light, only remain in the buffing paradigm for a short time, until the whole party had at least Haste, and then began pounding on the boss with Relentless Assault until he’s staggered. One he falls to the stagger, immediately switch to Aggression (he is weaker to physical attacks than he is to magical ones) and began sapping his health.
At this point, he only uses lasers which don’t knock off too much health, so don’t focus too much on healing and keep on pounding at him until he falls out of stagger. If you’ve depleted his health enough, his head should come forward after the first stagger or soon after and he’ll begin biting back a bit more harshly. But that’s alright, because you’ve got your medical team on hand! (At this point in the game, I made sure that every character at least had the ability to use Cure in the Medic role.)
Once Barthandelus’ head comes forward, he can use much more powerful attacks. When he powers up for Thanatosian Laughter, immediately switch to Combat Clinic, and once he’s finished wiping the floor with you and everyone’s health is back into the yellows, switch to Entourage to keep up the offensive while Sazh finishes off the healing and Fang takes he brunt of his blows. Once you hit the high yellows or low greens with HP, switch to Relentless Assault and kick the crap out of him building his Chain Gauge and staggering him as much as you possibly can.
Keep up the buffs and also keep an eye on Barthandelus’ debuffs – he should always be inflicted with Slow. If he loses it, quickly switch to Guerilla and debuff him, before switching back to Relentless Assault or Entourage, depending on your party’s overall HP level.
On the whole, Barthandelus is far less threatening than he was when we last encountered him. He has a pretty debilitating attack in which he removes everyone’s buffs and replaces them with debuffs, but a simple casting of Dispelga can remove this. This attack will usually only happen is you have loads of buffs, so if you find yourself being hit with this relentlessly, only concentrate on keeping up Haste and don’t worry too much about the rest of them. Only use Dispelga if your HP is low when he hits you with the debuffs, as you’ll want to conserve your TP just in case he catches you offguard with Thanatosian Laughter, in which case you might be required to use Renew.
Doom. We all hate it, and we all fall to it sooner or later. However, contrary to common belief, Doom usually only hits you when you go over a certain time limit in the battle (with the exception of the final fight.) and is basically FFXIII’s way of telling you that you’re taking too long in a battle. The way to simply avoid Doom completely is to work up a good system of stacking paradigms efficiently so you don’t waste time looking through them, and venture out of your comfort zone with HP loss – with the right defense, you can afford to dip into the low yellows or even high reds before you need to switch to a healing paradigm.
If you’re being offensive enough, and you have the right defense set up, Barthandelus should fall in the fourth or fifth stagger. No doom.

    REMEMBER: ALWAYS USE LIBRA!

Nice guide, except from one little miss. In the ” Mystic tower” paradigm, Fang is sentinel, not synergist :)
