Welcome to Pauper’s Drop, and part five of our Bioshock 2 walkthrough.
Things are going to get tougher from now on, so there are a few key things to remember – search everything and preserve ammo/Eve whenever possible. The last thing you want to do is run out of either of these when you really need them, and you will…
Once again the train’s progress has been blocked, and Sinclair tells you that you’ll need the security override key from the local governor, Grace Holloway.
New Goal: Go to the Sinclair Deluxe Hotel
Before you go anywhere, search around the train station for a few items and some ammo
Once you’re done searching, follow the waypoint arrow onward, picking up the Machine Gun from the next room, and tweak your plasmid/tonic layout at the Gene-Bank if you feel the need.
As you enter the next room you will see three Splicers sat around a corpse in front of a Vent.
For an easier fight, blast one with an Electro Bolt, and duck back into the previous room so that they come running to you one by one. Shock and drill them as they get to you to save ammo.
Loot the various items in the room then continue on into The Fishbowl, as a small fight finishes between some Splicers – one of them a big fella.
Grace Holloway will give you a piece of her mind, and it’s obvious she’s not too happy about you trying to hunt down Eleanor.
Head to the left of the old diner, and around the building – ignore the waypoint arrow for now.
As you get to the end of the building you’ll come across a Splicer by a fire, with a Security Bot. Shock the pair of them, take out the Splicer and hack the bot for some extra defence.
You’ll see a Big Daddy wandering around here, who we will come back to soon enough.
Continue along the rear of the diner, hacking the ammo vending machine on your way, and edge out at the end – you will see a Security camera to the right. Hack this from a distance.
Opposite the security camera is another Splicer on the roof of Marlene’s Flower Emporium. Once the Splicer has been dealt with, head inside the Emporium for an Audio Diary and other random items.
Head out, and back round to the left-hand side of the diner where you saw the Splicer near the fire – there is a ramp here that leads up on to the roof of the diner. Be careful of the turret on the left – shock and hack this.
Take the makeshift bridge over to the roof of the Flower Emporium for another Audio Diary and the Hacker’s Delight tonic – picking this up will trigger a few Splicers, but they’re easily dealt with.
Now it’s time to sort out the Big Daddy. The easiest way to do this is to go back up on the roof of the diner, and then attack the Big Daddy when he is on the other side – not the side where he can follow you up the ramp.
There are enough places up here to take cover from his attacks, and a few explosive canisters you can fire down using Telekineses.
Once he’s down, head back to the ground and pick up your new Little Sister. Now that you have her, you may as well get yourself some Adam from the corpse by the entrance.
As usual, make sure you prepare the area with Trap Rivets, and anything else at your disposal, ready for the Splicer attack. Most are easily dealt with though as you can shock the water pool to your right where most of them come from.
Once you’re done, follow the waypoint arrow, taking a quick stop-off at the Gatherer’s Garden for a few upgrades if you have enough Adam. Personally, I replaced the Telekineses with Winter Blast – one of my favourite plasmids.
As you enter the Sinclair Hotel, pop in to the small office on the left for an Audio Diary and some goodies from the desk and filing cabinets.
As you carry on a new Splicer – the Brute Splicer – will jump out in front and block your path. Sinclair pops up with a bit of helpful info – in order to get through the wreckage you’re gonna have to do some research to find out how the Splicer got so burly.
New Goal: Search the Pawn Shop Downtown for the Research Camera.
Follow the waypoint arrow back to the Fishbowl, and head down the stairs to Downtown.
As you enter you’ll be attacked by a Brute Splicer. You can either drop back into the alley and take him out at a distance with a plasmid/gun combo, or stun him and get up close to take him out with the drill to save ammo.
As his health drops he will try and run away and smash a hole in the wall to the right, letting loose a couple more Splicers. Even if you manage to kill him before he does this, they will still burst through the wall.
Nip back, and hack the First Aid machine – you don’t want any Splicers healing themselves from this as you’ll be doing some Adam gathering soon.
Work your way around the room first, making sure you pick up the Audio Diary in the north-east corner, and another underneath the door combination lock on the south wall.
This audio diary plays automatically, and is from Tobias Riefers explaining he has locked the door to the clinic – he has to think up a new code every day, and is off to mull it over at the diner.
Before heading to the diner, there is a corpse you can gather Adam from in this room, so set the usual traps and start gathering.
Run back to the diner, go inside through the door at the back, and look for a corpse lying in the corner of the main room – search him to learn the code to the clinic door.
As soon as you do a group of Splicers will drop down through the ceiling, and some will shoot from the outside. Do what’s necessary to take them out, then head back to the clinic door.
Head towards the Vent in the clinic, and look to the left up the stairs straight away – a Splicer will try and throw a burning barrel down at you. If you’re quick and shoot it will explode in his hands. If not, be careful if you chase him up the stairs as there is a Security Camera at the top.
Once the Splicer and camera have been dealt with, drop off your Little Sister at the vent now you’ve gathered Adam with her.
Go back up the stairs, hack the first aid machine, and then get your Electro Shock ready. Head through the door to the left of the camera and fire a shock at the turret directly ahead – run across and hack this quickly before it recovers from the shock.
Carry on over the roof and across the wooden walkway into the next room to find another Audio Diary and a safe to hack. A Splicer will come through the door behind you when you hack the safe, and another will be out on the roof.
Go back, and drop through the hole in the roof to get into the Pawn Shop below where you will find the Research Camera on the counter.
New Goal: Research Splicers with the Research Camera.
It’s time to put the camera to some use.
Head out of the Pawn Shop, and as you go through the door get ready to use the camera on the Splicer outside. Once you do this you will swap back to your standard weapon – take out the Splicer while the film is rolling to earn a research bonus.
Get used to doing this as often as possible as it will make your life a lot easier – researching Splicers will provide damage boosts and tell you which weapons they are most vulnerable to.
A few more Splicers will attack once you take out the first one – try and use your camera before killing them.
New Goal: Research Brute Splicers.
Follow the waypoint arrow into Skid Row.
As you enter you will see a Big Daddy fighting with a few Splicers – just hang back and leave him to it but set your camera running on the Big Daddy to clock up some research points.
When the Splicers are dead, finish off the Big Daddy yourself. If you have done well so far, you should get an achievement here for killing three big daddies without dying during the fight.
Pick up your new Little Sister and nip in to the Pharmacy – as you go into the back room you may be jumped by three Splicers from behind. Sort these out, and then go into the back room of the Pharmacy and through the broken wall to find another Audio Diary and a Safe.
Head out, and before you follow the Waypoint arrow there is a corpse under the security camera that you can harvest for Adam. Prep up, and gather away. There is another large pool of water in this room which makes things a little easier when the Splicers attack.
Follow the waypoint arrow now, and ahead you will see a Brute Splicer – start the research camera rolling and he will attack. Either deal with him from a distance with guns, or use your drill when he is stunned within melee range.
Once he’s dead you’ll learn a new skill, the Drill Dash.
New Goal: Clear the Rubble at the Sinclair Deluxe.
Work your way back to the path blocked by the rubble but be careful as you will come up against a few surprise Splicer attacks on the way.
Once there, use the Drill Dash attack to smash through the rubble – as soon as you do three Splicers will attack from the other side.
New Goal: Go to Grace’s Apartment
Now you need to go and find Grace, up on the top floor, but before you do there is another corpse to the left of the pool of water that you can gather Adam from. It’s pretty much business as usual, but this time a Brute Splicer will join the attack while she is gathering, so be ready.
When she’s finished, head back towards the entrance and into the small office where you will find a vent to drop her off.
Be prepared – once you drop her off this may trigger a Big Sister attack. If it does, try and use your research camera before killing her. Big Sisters are more vulnerable to Armor-Piercing Rounds, so if you have any, make the most of them here.
Head up the stairs, and into the room on the south side – work your way through to the bathroom at the back to find an Audio Diary.
Follow the waypoint arrow, and go through the first door on the left that is open – take out the two Splicers in the room and search the safe for some goodies.
Continue following the waypoint arrow through the various rooms, searching for items and dodging the occasional Splicer attack, until you come out into another corridor lined with portholes.
Turn right, follow the corridor and then right again – as you turn, fire an Electro Bolt at the gun turret at the end and rush down to hack before it recovers.
Go into the room here for a Power to the People weapon upgrade machine. Head back the way you came and watch out for the two Splicers that attack.
Before running out to the area where the vent is, peek right and remote hack the Security Camera, and then pick up the Freezing Drill tonic – this is a useful tonic to have as it means you freeze enemies for longer, and have a chance to freeze them with your drill. Watch out for the Splicer ambush as you pick it up.
Head down the corridor and up through the room to get to the platform above the camera where you will find another Audio Diary.
Go back down, and follow the waypoint arrow up the ramp. Nip through the broken wall on the right just before the crying Splicer.
There is a safe in here to hack, but be careful of the gun turret on the right – give this a shock and hack it before working on the safe.
Go back out and deal with the crying Splicer, and then get ready for a Brute Splicer attack from your left. Take him out and then go into the room he came from.
There is another Audio Diary in the butterfly room on the left.
Follow the arrow, but be careful as you exit the bathroom as there is a Security Camera on your left. Remote hack this and then head out on to the upper floor of the walkway. Go to the right-hand side for some Eve, ammo and an Audio Diary.
New Goal: Find Grace’s Hiding Place
Head back round, following the arrow, until you come to the main door to Grace’s office.
Grab the Keen Observer tonic from the room on the left then follow the arrow through into the bedroom and pick up the Audio Diary from the bed.
Rip the poster off the wall to reveal a hidden button which opens a secret passageway through the wardrobe to your left.
New Goal: Get the Override Key from Grace.
Go through the passageway and peep through the window to see Grace.
She will open the door for you, allowing you to take the override key from the table, and leaving you with a decision – do you leave her alone, or kill her?
As we’re taking the nice route with this guide, we’re going to leave her alone to ensure the better ending, but the choice is yours. One thing to note is that if you leave her alone, she will provide you with a few heavy duty security bots which will help you in your escape.
Follow the waypoint arrow back to the train, dealing with Splicers along the way. Be careful when you get back into the Fishbowl as a Splicer activates a turret just as you enter.
Once you get back to the train station, go into the Security office and use the Lockdown Controls.
New Goal: Ride the Train out of Pauper’s Drop.
A very simple goal – get on the train and pull the lever to leave this section behind and move on to Siren Alley.
