At first glance, there’s not much to the combat in Assassin’s Creed, but combined with clever use of defence, which we covered in Part One of The Art Of Combat , it can be very satisfying pulling off combos and slicing and dicing multiple opponent’s with the skill of a master swordsman. In Part Two of The Art Of Combat we take a look at attack and how best to kill your enemy…
Attacking your enemy successfully is all about timing and becoming a master of chaining together smooth-flowing combos. Though you’ll be slamming down on the attack button frequently in Assassin’s Creed II, there is method to the button-mashing madness. As your opponent defends your attack with his sword held horizontally, it can seem impossible to break through his guard. Earlier on in the game though, when enemies aren’t so tough, persistance is the key because constantly mashing the attack button we’ll often see you break his defence.
When the going gets tough and the guards get tougher, or there’s more enemies to kill, you’ll need to pull out and master another tactic: the instant kill manoeuvre. To do this you simply press the attack button at the precise moment that your first block is attacked. You’ll then see Ezeio execute an impressive deadly manoeuvre that will brutally eliminate his opponent. Practice the art of the instant kill and work on your timing and you’ll soon be carving up the guards with the skills of Zorro.
A combination of defence and attack is always the best tactic, but there are are few other combat tactics that will come in very handy, including the grappling manoeuvre. We’ll be covering those in Part Three of Assassin’s Creed 2: The Art of Combat.
