A Begineer's Guide to APB

Published on July 2nd, 2010

We’ve been tooling around in ’s open world for a while now and unsurprisingly San Paro isn’t the kindest place to new players. It isn’t that Realtime World’s MMO doesn’t introduce itself properly, it’s just that some things are best learned with experience. However that takes way too much time, so we’re going to offer up five tips that will ease the transition into this competitive pvp based environment.

1. Take your time creating your character

Few games have more potential for customisation than APB but if your character doesn’t look good in the first place, all your fancy clothing and tattoo designs will be for nought. We know you’ll be absolutely gagging to get into the action districts, but make sure you are happy with your creation before clicking the all powerful finish button. Making any physiological changes to your avatar can cost a lot of money post creation in the social zone, so don’t be afraid take the opportunity to experiment as it won’t cost you a dime and you’ll thank us in the long run.

2. Play the Tutorial

APB isn’t really your typical third person shooter, so it’s best to familiarise yourself with the game using the tutorial. For both the Criminal and the Enforcer factions, the tutorial zone features five missions which will take the average gamer around ten minutes to complete and introduce the challenging shooting and driving dynamics in an easy environment not threatened by other players. Not only is this time valuable but you’ll also gain faction points from a unique contact and unlock new guns.

3. Wear a headset

Teamwork is vital to any online experience and typing just isn’t fast enough for proper communication in the action zones, so utilising the in-game VoIP (Voice over IP) is a must. Setting up a microphone is an absolute doddle, just connect the hardware, go into settings, click the test button to make sure you are transmitting and the game will automatically pick up what you’re saying. Squads that communicate have an immediate advantage over those that don’t as they can strategise, properly map out routes and honestly have a much better time.

4. Pledge to a Contact

New weapons, vehicles, equipment and design templates are all unlocked by completing missions for contacts in San Paro, but it’s best to target one gang and do only their missions until you max out their rank. This way you’ll unlock the higher level stuff earlier on, rather than just trying to do everything at once.

5. Ride Shotgun

Cars are invaluable tools for engagements and when properly utilised they can be absolutely devastating. Drive-bys are a great tactic especially when using a 4×4 which can seat as many as four crew members. Simply roll up towards your target, and your passengers will be able to lay waste to them with their automatic weapons either riding in the front seat or the back. Whilst riding shotgun just make sure you don’t accidentally shoot your team mates. Most of the time transport won’t last long before expiring, so jump out whenever flames appear underneath the bonnet. At the moment only a handful of individuals have unlocked rocket or grenade launchers, so players should be safe using this tactic against low level combatants.
