Welcome to the first part of our Alan Wake walkthrough which covers the first episode. Along the way we’ll show you how to find every collectible and give you some tips to beat the Taken. This is a work in progress so be sure to check back at our Alan Wake section as we build the walkthrough.
We’re going to split it up into bite-sized manageable, readable chunks. Each episode of Alan Wake is split into a number of different areas. Episode 1 consists of three areas:
A Writer’s Dream
Welcome to Bright Falls
Waking Up In a Nightmare
As you can see from the title this is part 1 of 3. Okay, let’s go.
The HUD for Alan Wake couldn’t be simpler. Your objective marker is shown in yellow on the mini-map in the top left hand corner, which also indicates your health around the edges. The top right hand corner shows your selected weapon and ammo and next the mini-map, once you pick it up, you”ll see a flashlight icon indicating remaining power and how many batteries you have left, we’ll come to that a bit later.
You’re also on the look-out for collectibles too. Although you can take a linear route through the game, there are also a variety of things to look out for and in this walkthrough we’re going to help you find every collectible out there.
As well as taking on the three main enemy types (you can check out our enemy guide here) you’ll also be on the look out for the following:
Coffee Thermos Flasks
Manuscript Pages
Can Pyramids
Nightmare Pages (only available if you play in Nightmare mode)
Radio Shows
TV Shows
Signs
Whenever you see bold print that’s where you’ll find a collectible. You’ll find these things if you follow the walkthrough, but we’ll also be creating separate guides for each of these collectibles. Once complete, by clicking on the Alan Wake main walkthrough page.
The episodes are split into different areas.
EPISODE 1
A Writer’s Dream
Collectibles
3 x Thermos Flasks
1 x Can Pyramids
- Get to the Lighthouse
If you follow the yellow marker on the mini-map you’ll veer right, so before you do so just head straight forward until you can go no further. You’ll be at one end of a narrow broken bridge and on the floor you’ll see the first collectible of many. Pick up the Coffee Thermos Flask. Back track on yourself and head in the direction of the yellow marker which takes you down a hiking trail and some wooden steps. As you get to the far end, a shadowy figure will appear (the first Taken.) He’s armed with an axe and will run at you. You haven’t got a weapon so run for it (LB) in the opposite direction. Keep following the path down and jump over the barrier.
Another taken will attack you, but it’s just a tutorial to teach you how to use the dodge maneovre (LB + L Analogue Stick.) You’ll have to dodge him twice before he disappears. Move through the gate and across the wooden bridge. A light smashes and the area is plunged into darkness. Another Taken appears and it’s time to sprint again! There’s only one way to go so keep following the hiking trail and across another wooden bridge where you’ll see a man the other side beckoning you into his shack. Move into the shack straight away. A cut-scene kicks in. Scary moment! (eyeballs on TV sets and Jack Nicholson in the Shining Axe through the door.) You’re trapped momentarily.
Wait until you see the bright light and follow it. You’ll see that when you stand under the light you’re healed. This will stand you in good stead throughout your journey. If you see a beam of light from lamp-posts, or spotlights you can stand in it to protect yourself from the evil enemies, and you’ll be healed in the process if you’re hurt. After that a set of steps will appear in front of you, follow them down. At the next beam of light you’ll see a flashlight on a tree stump. Pick it up and then you’ll be tasked with pointing it at the shadowy figure. See how it burns away it’s protective darkness. The reticule gets smaller until it vanishes and then the Taken are vulnerable. You can also boost, send a powerful beam of light from the torch, making the darkness vanish more quickly, by pressing LT. Watch out because this runs down your torch battery and if you run out of batteries (which you can pick up along the journey) you’re done for.
After that short tutorial, you’ll see a Revolver appear on the tree stump and you’ll get the chance to test out your aiming skills by shooting at the Taken (aiming for the head will take them down quicker.) On your right there’s a crate with some ammo and on the fence behind there’s the first Can Pyramid. Shoot it with your pistol. Keeping following the path forward and you’ll come across two Taken attacking you. This is your first chance to use both your flashlight and conventional weapon (pistol) to take them out. Aim the torch at the figures, burning away their darkness and shoot them with your pistol. Move forward until you see a red box with the word “Emergency” on it. It contains a flare gun and some ammo. In the stone bunker just on the right you’ll find another Coffee Thermos Flask.
Move forward the only way that you haven’t been and now you’ll come across three Taken. This is the chance to test out the flare gun. You can switch weapons with the d-pad, so make sure it’s equipped and shoot it toward them. Check out how powerful it is! It takes all out instantly. As you move forward two more will appear behind you. You can just out-run them or stay and tackle them. They won’t pose much of threat at this stage. Keep following the objective marker until you jump down onto the road.
You’ll see a big black cloud of smoke that is whipping itself up into a tornado. Get ready to run for your life! Run the opposite way across the bridge. It will tear up parts of the bridge in front of you and you’ll have to step left and right to avoid the huge gaps. Once you reach the end of the bridge keep heading forward as far as you can go. On the right you’ll see a bench where you can pick up a Coffee Thermos Flask. Get into the Lighthouse!
