The plot thickens and the kidnapper asks to meet you at an abandoned coalmine. In this section you’ll encounter many possessed objects and some fiercy brutal Taken. Check out our complete guide, which also points you in the right direction to every collectible.

- Go to the Coalmine
Get into your truck and drive down path until it splits into two. Take the left fork and swing around the logs continuing down the road toward the mine. Keep following the track until you see a shack with a car outside. There’s a radio show to listen to inside. Before you go underneath the broken bridge, stop and get out of the car. You need to climb the rocks on your right and if you move toward the edge of the cliff you should see a red settee resting on a peak. There’s a coffeee thermos on it.
Back onto the path in the car and you’ll see a ranger tower on your right. Climb its steps and go inside where you’ll find another radio show to listen to. Head down hill and park at mine shaft on left hand side of the road. Go up steps right to the top where you’ll find a manuscript. Back onto the road again and follow track to coal mine. Before you go inside check out the sign to the museum on your left hand side as you enter. See the boarded up tunnel next to it? There’s a coffee thermos in the corner. Also to the right of the sign is a small wooden building with another sign that you can read. Move into the museum. You’ll see a manuscript just lying on the pathway as you move toward the entrance. When you get inside you’ll discover that the kidnapper you’re supposed to meet hasn’t turned up.

- Leave the Building
Jump over the metal chain and down the chute. In this room below there’s a coffee thermos on one of the shelves and at the far end of the room you can flick a switch that opens up a trap door in the centre of the room. Drop through the trap door and you’ll immediately see a manuscript in front of you. Leave the building.
- Reach the Mirror Peak Lookout
Weave your way through the train carraiges. The area will open up and Taken will appear as well as a couple of possessed objects, including a wheel. You should have picked up the flares just before this area so they’re the ideal weapon to use to suck the darkness from the objects. If you do give them the chance to throw themselves at you they’ll deal you a lot of damage. Aim for them first and then tackle the Taken after, if any are still standing after using the powerful flares. As you move forward through the next carraige you’ll pick up some flash bangs. Two Taken will drop down at the other end of the carraige. One flashbang will kill them instantly. You’ll now have to climb up the ladders on the side of the next carraige and onto the roof where you’ll drop down through the skylight.
There’s a possessed object banging around in there though, so throw a flare or a flashbang in to get rid of it before you drop down. Move out of the side door and watch as black smoke, resembling a tornado chews up trees in the distance. Head down the steps to the mine tracks.
- Turn off the power
You need to get into the building past the sparking part of the track, but you’ll be electrocuted unless you turn the power off. Jump in the car and head to the far end of this area. There are cylinders dotted around and if you drive into them you’ll damage your car, so weave in and out of them until you reach the building. There’s a switch inside that turns off the power. Now jump back in car and get back to the building on the opposite side. You’ll be able to knock over Taken along the way, but try and avoid some of the possessed objects that will throw themselves at you. Remember you can boost your headlights.
Stand under lights to be healed
Go up steps into building. As you move inside there’s some more Taken to deal with. There’s a flare gun and some ammo in here so they shouldn’t pose much of a threat. Into the next room and Taken climb down a ladder to attack you. There’s plenty of cylinders lying around so shoot them to give yourself an advantage. Climb the ladders. There’s a coffee thermos in this room on the red chair and a manuscript on a table.
Move out of the door and into the yard. Check out the hut that has the controls to open the gate. Go through the gate and pick up the flashbangs along the way. Take a right here, but watch out for the black blobs. Use your torch to burn them away. There’s two waves of Taken to deal with now, some bigger than the others. Keep your distance and concentrate on the large Taken first. Follow path around and you’ll see a manuscript on the floor. Follow path straight forward until you see a broken bridge on your right. There’s a coffee thermos on the end of the bridge. If you follow yellow markers left down into the mind you’ll also find a hidden chest. You’ll be attacked when you leave.
Follow the path back down and now take the path toward the bright light. Empty the emergency box on the tree next to it. Move across the bridge turn on the spotlight and get the pump action shotgun from right in front of it. You’lve now got a much more powerful weapon. Moving forward take the left path. Keep heading up the hill turning on spotlights along the way. Keep looking out for a barn on your left hand side . There’s a coffee thermos in the barn along with plenty of ammo. You’ll be attacked when trying to leave the barn and it can be tough even with the newly acquired pump action shot-gun. A flashbang or two will see to them. Back on track and keep moving up hill. You’ll reach a spotlight where there’s small pathway leading through the cliffs behind it. Go through the pathway and your attention will be focused on falling trees in the distance. Head through the makeshift graveyard. You’ll encounter dashing Taken here who will move around you swiftly and can be hard to pin down. You can make them stand still for a short period of time by shining you light directly at them.
Keep moving through graveyard and you’ll see a small hut with a light switch that beams a healing light on you when you flick it. Follow the track until you reach the Ghost Town.
- Cross Ghost Town
The car right in front of you will be possessed. It will rise in the air and come hurtling toward you so be prepared to burn it with your light. If you’re playing Nightmare Mode turn around and move back up the track to the remains of a tunnel. You’ll find the Nightmare Manuscript on the floor. Back in the right direction and you’ll see a manuscript just as you’re about to cross the bridge. Read the sign at the other end of the bridge. If you’re playing Nightmare Mode you’ll find a Nightmare manuscript in the first barn on the left after you’ve crossed the bridge. Alternatively, take a sharp right around the side of the barn as soon as you cross bridge and then when you look left at the end you’ll see another barn that has a coffee thermos sitting on the floor.
Keep moving forward through this area. Poltergeist objects will attack you as you move under the tower. You can use the legs of the tower to protect yourself. Now equip your flare gun for the next part. Move forward and a tractor and some other objects will rise in the air and fling themselves toward you. The flare gun will make light work out of destroying them. Press forward to the next clearing where you’ll see one large wooden shack and one small hut. Two poltergeist objects will attack. There’s a coffee thermos in the back corner by the old windmill part. Get keys from the small hut and watch the TV show in the large shack and take the ammo and the hunting rifle.
Shine light directly in their eyes to drain their darkness
- Reach Mirror Peak Lookout
Move through bedroom out of the back door and up the ladders. Follow the path to the left past the trees to find a hidden chest. Now follow path upwards. You’ll meet Ravens before the next bridge – one flare will kill them all. Move quickly across the bridges because they’ll collapse underneath you. Watch out for the jump too. Keep running until you drop down a mine shaft.
- Exit the Silver Mine
Folllow the path of the mine shaft keeping to the left wall and moving past the daubing on the rocks reading ‘Tunnels go to Cauldron Lake.’ You’re moving deep and down into the heart of the mine. You’ll get a splitting head-ache as you walk down and when the path levels off you’ll come to a pile of dead trees. Look to the right and behind you and you’ll see a manuscript. Move back up the path the way you came and when you reach the entrance to the tunnel you’ve just been down take a left, across the wooden platform until you drop down into the large open mining area. When you drop down into the mining area you’ll see a manuscript in front of you slightly to the left. There’s ammo lying around here so be sure to pick it up. Move forward to what looks like the exit to the area. When you do the tunnel will collapse and a big Taken will explode through a doorway on your left.
Take him out first. If you’ve picked up the flare gun use it. They’ll be other Taken attacking you too. Go through the door where you were attacked from and you’ll find a coffee thermos on your left hand side on a wooden platform. Press forward taking a left at the next junction. Move around to the left and onto a wooden platform. A puzzle, if you can call it that, to solve here. Flick the control switch and you’ll be able to move the elevator, which is some planks of wood. Bring it right down to your position so you can get across to the other side. Go up the ladder and activate the next switch. Do the same again, putting the elevator higher this time. It’s at an angle now so you do have to make quite a jump but you’ll make it comfortably. Before you head up the next ladder on your right, move around to the left where you’ll another activation switch. Flick it and bring the elevator so it’s level with the small wooden platform on left of screen. Now go back to the ladders that you just walked past and hop across to the next area. Kick the next ladder and climb down to activate another switch. Bring the elevator right to the top now. Climb back up ladder, hop across and exit the mine.
Aim for the big guys first
As soon as you leave the mine take a right up the pathway and up ladders to wooden tower where you’ll find a manuscript. Now head back down the path watching out for pesky ravens as you go. You’ll spy a generator on your left which summons a cable car. Hop on the car and move across going to the other side. It will crash and you’ll have to make your way up to the left to where the cable car would have dropped you off. They’ll be a couple of Taken here to deal with. Move up the track and a train car will crash land out of nowhere. Move behind it and you’ll an Emergency box, straight opposite it is the cable car platform where you’ll see a can pyramid waiting to be shot down. Now follow path upwards to the smoking shack where you’ll find the Hunting rifle. You’ll be attacked in this area. It’s hard to keep out their way so don’t forget to use your dodge maneovre and bide yourself some time by throwing flares.
Follow trail forward until you reach Safe Haven with an emergency box. You’ll encounter some more Taken on your way here but you can just outrun them and get to the safe area. Right in front of the light you’ll see a sign to Cauldron Lake, read it. Follow the path around and across the shaky suspension bridge. Half way across the bridge you’ll be attacked from both ends. Behind you will be a big Taken who you’ll want to deal with first. In front of you will be axe-wielding and axe-throwing Taken. Use your flashbangs on the big guy. When you hit the other side of the bridge, immediately take a left over the rocky terrain and you’ll see a coffee thermos resting on a rock. Get back on track. At the first tree that lines the track on your left, look left. Shine your torch over the rocks and you’ll see the yellow sign indicating there’s a chest to find. Follow the arrows to the hidden area. Back on track keep moving forward. You can’t miss the manuscript sitting on a rock to your right. Keep moving forward.
- Cross the Mountain Range
You’re heading high now. kick and push the wooden planks to make bridges and ramps across. You’ll come across some ruins. Enter them via the cellar to the left of the front door. Move upstairs and pick up all the ammo you can from this room. Head up to the next level and you’ll come crashing through the roof into the room where you’ve just been. There’s 10 Taken to deal with her, the most you’ve had to deal with in one space, so far! Equip your flare gun and use it any time you can. They descend quickly and there’s not much space so you’re light weapons are so important to keep them at bay and give you time to get a shot in. When you’ve survived head back upstairs and drop down at the back of the building. Before you move on go round the side of the building to the back gate where you’ll find a coffee thermos.
- Reach Mirror Peak
Breathe a sigh of relief, no more Taken to deal with now. Just follow the trail and you’ll spot a boat in the distance. Keep going until the cut-scene kicks in.

Honestly, Alan Wake is a masterpiece, but it’s also flawed, which is a shame since it was in development for 5 years. Sure, those flaws aren’t that big to stop anyone from actually buying the game, or decrease the final score, but they do appear.
