Want to know what you’re up against, then look no further. In Alan Wake you’ll encounter three evil enemy types all of which can be tackled with a range of light-based and conventional weaponry. Check out Gamerzine’s enemy guide.
TAKEN
Enemies largely take one form, the Taken. These are humans that live in the area of Bright Falls that have been possessed by an evil force. They will be equipped with sledge hammers, axes, scythes and chainsaws and won’t think twice about hacking you and burying them into your skull. They are shrouded and protected by a veil of darkness that you have to penetrate to weaken them. First you have to destroy the light force and then you have to kill them with conventional weapons, such as your pistol or shotgun.
Taken come in many varieties. The smaller ones move faster but they can’t take a lot of damage, whereas the larger are more cumbersome but can take more of your punishment. Some Taken will look like they’ve appeared out of nowhere but they actually teleport over small distances and take you by surprise. They’ll sport a variety of weapons and the larger those weapons are the bigger the damage they’ll do to you. You’ll also notice that some Taken have a stronger veil of darkness which is harder to penetrate. You might need to use the boosting abilities of your hand-held, light-emitting weapons to deal with these horrors quickly and efficiently.
RAVENS
You’ll see Ravens wherever you go in Bright Falls. Individually they are no threat, but when they come together in flocks they’ll swoop down and attack you. You can be particularly vulnerable when crossing a bridge or navigating a narrow mountain path. There’s no point shooting at these pesky creatures, instead they hate light so aim the beam of your flashlight toward them and boost, or shoot a flare into the air to dispose of them instantly.
POLTERGEIST OBJECTS
There’s some crazy stuff that goes on in the world of Alan Wake. The darkness can possess inanimate objects such as tractors, boats, barrels and furniture. It will throw them up in the air and hurl them at you. Use a light source to destroy them!
Remember that light is you friend. If you see a beam of light from a light stand or lamppost you can stand under it and can’t be harmed by the darkness. Your health will also regenerate in these areas.
