Overlord Minions

Can controlling the henchmen be as fun as the master? Find out in Codemasters' Overlord Minions...

Written by Chris Schilling, 03 July 2009

It's (nearly) always fun to play as the bad guy, but few games give you the opportunity to control the poor schlubs who have to work for him. Well - you probably guessed as much - now you can, as Giblet, Stench, Blaze and Bolt get their time in the limelight as the Overlord Minions.

There's rarely a point you'll get seriously stuck, but there's been some effort put in to keeping things fresh. Stench, for example, can walk through clouds of toxic gas, while Blaze - as his name suggests - likes to burn stuff.

Touchscreen controls work very well indeed - while fights tend to devolve into clumsy stylus swiping, selecting the minions is simple enough, and moving them around works perfectly. The characters themselves have plenty of personality, all buggy eyes and skinny limbs, though the environments are a little uninspiring.

It's moderately amusing at times, with a few decent gags, though it's over a little too soon, and at times feels aimed at a younger audience, even though the PEGI rating on the front cover would suggest otherwise. A little throwaway, then, but fun while it lasts.
