Chalk this one up as the weirdest news story you'll read all day. A Japanese bloke, known only as Sal9000, has married his video game girlfriend - in real life.

The Japanese gamer, who fell in love with virtual girlfriend Nene Anegasaki in Nintendo DS romance game Love Plus, declared his love for the pixel lady in a ceremony fronted by a priest and "dozens of witnesses".

Of course, the priest went on record to say that the marriage was neither official nor legally binding, but we won't tell ol' love-struck Sal that.

Love Plus, which is only available in Japan, sees gamers attempt to woo love interests with flowers and chocolates as well as take them out on dates, bringing a whole new meaning to the 'Touch Me' slogan used by Nintendo at the DS's launch.

Only in Japan, my friends, only in Japan.
