Uh-oh. Bought an imported DSi? Well, it seems you won't be able to play DSi-enhanced PAL titles on your handheld, as a NeoGAF forumite earlier today confirmed the ever-circling rumour that the console was region-locked.
While DSi units will play normal DS cartridges from any region, it seems any games developed exclusively for the latest version of Nintendo's massively popular dual-screened console will only work with a console from the same region.
As NeoGAF poster t3nmilez says,"I just bought the new iDOLM@STER DS game, which uses the camera so you can take pictures of QR-codes and unlock new outfits and content. I tried putting it in my American DSi and the game refuses to register, it says that nothing is inserted in the slot. I then put it into my Japanese DSi and it ran fine. I also tried it on my American DSlite, and it also ran no problem on that."
"I guess that we can safely say that games with DSi-specific features and full DSi titles will be region locked in the future. What a pain..." he added.
We're in the fortunate position of owning a Japanese DSi as well as a PAL model, so we'll be testing this out ourselves just as soon as we get our hands on a game with DSi-specific features. Perhaps 505 Games' forthcoming Hair Salon. Assuming it's not compromising our masculinity by playing that. Ahem.
We've contacted Nintendo to ask for its comments about this, and we'll update the story later should we hear back.
In better DSi news, tonight sees the release of MySims Camera on the DSiWare service, for just 200 points.
