Aside from the excellent Art Style series, the DSi has been a little short on high-quality exclusives, but all that's about to change this Friday, with the release of Flipnote Studio on the European DSiWare service.

Flipnote Studio is a free DSiWare treat from NintendoThis exceptional piece of software has been available in Japan for a while now - indeed, it was one of the first titles released on the DSiWare service - and has captured the imagination of the more creative gamers. As its name suggests, it allows players to draw a series of images and then put them together to make an animation. You can even add sound to your creations and then upload them to a bespoke site which allows you to show off your own miniature masterpieces.

Flipnote Studio is a free DSiWare treat from NintendoCreated by developer Intelligent Systems, it's a remarkably well-constructed package, with some effective and accessible drawing tools, with the ability to add splashes of colour to your hand-drawn art. If you plan on making a flickbook film, you can instantly flick between frames with a tap of the stylus, with a 'trace' view allowing you to make subtle changes to the previous picture for ultra-smooth animations.
The Japanese version received a recent update which added to the feature set and made a few general adjustments to the software. It's this new version rather than the original which us European gamers will be getting on Friday, so we'll have the complete package at the first time of asking (though don't be surprised if Nintendo decide to update it further in future if it becomes popular).
What's even more remarkable about all this is that Flipnote Studio is completely free. That's right - you'll be able to download the software on Friday and it won't cost you a penny. We've had the Japanese version for a while on our imported DSi, and can confirm that it's well worth playing with - that said, it can turn into a real time-sink if you're of a creative bent!
No news yet on the site Nintendo plans to use for uploading and viewing your created clips and those of other users - we'll bring you more information on that as and when we get it.
