Nintendo registers SuperMario4.comNintendo has registered, prompting rumours that a sequel to NES classic Super Mario Bros. 3 could be in development.

According to IGN, the registration occurred “just days ago”, with the URL now leading to Nintendo’s country selector homepage.

But what could the domain registration mean?

Well, Nintendo announced in January that it was working on a new 2D Mario game for the 3DS, which is due for release prior to April 2013.

But it’s also expected to be working on a Mario game for its Wii U console, which is due for release later this year.

We’d wager Super Mario 4 could be the former.

Whatever Super Mario 4 may turn out to be, though, expect to see a lot more of the red-capped plumber at E3 in June.
