Nintendo has told Eurogamer that the 3DS will get a price cut by “around a third” on Friday, 12th August.
“Nintendo of Europe will be reducing the European trade price of Nintendo 3DS to retailers by around a third from 12th August 2011, as part of a global trade price reduction initiative,” revealed a PR representative from the Japanese conglomerate.
“The ultimate price to consumers is, of course, determined by retailers, however we look forward to consumers benefiting from much lower retail prices very soon.”
Currently gamers can snap up a Nintendo 3DS for around £180 from most online retailers, even though the RRP is still officially £229.99.
This morning’s announcement should peg the RRP back to £153.33, but we suspect most retailers will be selling console bundles, usually with a game and third party accessories, for around £149.99.
Nintendo also announced that early adopters will be rewarded for their good faith by being eligible to download twenty games – ten NES and ten Game Boy – via the eShop at a later date.
The initiative is being dubbed the ‘Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Programme’ and to be eligible owners will need to connect to the eShop before the price drop hits in August.
It is widely believed this move will result in many more Nintendo 3DS units being sold at retail. Now if only some original games would come out for the blasted thing…
