Nintendo has announced that the 3DS has become the first console in history to reach five million sales in under a year in Japan.
The DS was the previous record holder gaining the impressive five million benchmark in fifty-six weeks, but the 3DS has bested that by four weeks.
These figures were utilised by Andriasang, who noted that 3DS sales picked up markedly as soon as Nintendo decided to drop the price of their handheld significantly prior to Christmas.
After a faltering start Nintendo has proven that consumers are hungry for a new handheld committed entirely to playing games, and this news should be greeted postively by arch-rivals Sony as well, who are scheduled to launch their latest handheld, the PlayStation Vita, this Wednesday in the EU.
