Overlord: interview with Kevin Mullard
He wasn’t even working for
Codemasters when he first spied
Overlord, the evil action RPG in
which you command an ever-growing
army of babbling minions. But fate
brought him to the company, and he
hasn’t stopped laughing since…
Why did Overlord catch your eye?
I caught a glimpse of it two years ago
while at another company. All I saw was
minions hacking down sunflowers and
I just thought ‘this is fantastic’. The
concept was so original and I thought it
would work so well on consoles – it
was originally a PC game.
How much has the game changed
since you first spotted it?
The core has stayed all the way through
and we’ve developed the idea of the
minions, which are the most important
thing. We haven’t lost anything during
development – just refined it.
The controls, for instance, were very
clunky - achieving a control scheme
that works took an awful lot of time.
Also, originally minions couldn’t pick up
things – but when we tried that out it
worked so well – they can now pick up
dozens of objects.
